Two generations of careful Bakersfield work.

Ellis & Son started as one truck and one man in 1972. Today it's a twelve-person crew run by the founder's son — with the same idea Frank started with. Do honest work. Finish what you started. Treat the homeowner like a neighbor.

§ 01 — The founder

It started with one truck and one toolbox.

Frank Ellis came back from working construction up north in 1972 and figured Bakersfield homeowners might be better off if someone in town actually returned phone calls. He bought a truck, printed business cards, and started taking jobs from neighbors.

For the first ten years, it was just Frank — a kitchen remodel here, a bathroom there, the occasional addition. Word got around because Frank did what he said he was going to do and showed up when he said he was going to show up. Boring virtues, but it turns out homeowners notice.

His son Robert Ellis grew up on those job sites. By the time Robert was sixteen he was framing walls on summer weekends. By twenty-five he’d worked every trade in the company. He joined full-time in 2003, and the company name became Ellis & Son.

Today Robert runs the company. Frank still walks every active job site every week. The crew is twelve people. The approach hasn’t changed.

§ 02 — How we work

Three things we don't compromise.

Every project has trade-offs — budget, timeline, finish level, scope. These three are not on the table.

Honest pricing.

Written line-item quotes up front. If something changes mid-project, you see a written change order with cost and timeline impact before we do the work. No "TBD" surprises at the end.

Quality workmanship.

We slow down on the stuff you can't see — waterproofing, framing, rough plumbing, electrical. The finish work shines because the work underneath was done right.

One project manager from day one to final walkthrough. You always know who to call. We finish what we started. And we stand behind everything we build with a written warranty.

§ 03 — Five decades in Kern County

The long version.

The milestones that shaped the company, from one truck in 1972 to a twelve-person team today.

  • 1972

    Frank Ellis founds the company

    A one-truck operation working remodels for Bakersfield neighbors and family friends. Word of mouth carried it through the first decade.

  • 1985

    First custom build crew

    Three full-time tradesmen joined as the work shifted from single-room remodels toward larger additions and full renovations.

  • 1994

    Office moves to current location

    A small office and yard near downtown Bakersfield — same address we operate from today.

  • 2003

    Robert Ellis joins his father

    Robert came on full-time after working summers and weekends since he could swing a hammer. The company name becomes "Ellis & Son".

  • 2011

    200th completed project

    A milestone we celebrated quietly. The work goes on.

  • 2018

    Robert takes over operations

    Frank steps back from daily operations but still walks job sites every week. Robert leads the team day-to-day.

  • 2024

    Largest project to date

    The Stockdale Residence — an eleven-month, down-to-studs whole-home remodel — completes on time and on budget.

  • Today

    Same approach, bigger team

    A crew of twelve, a regular roster of trusted subs, and the same values Frank started with: do honest work, finish what you started, treat the homeowner like a neighbor.
